The first time Gary Stutler put brush to canvas was over 35 years ago. That painting is still clear in his mind: A bright, brick-red house in the snow.

This image wasn’t created from direct observation, but Gary very much wanted it to look as though it had, indeed, been painted from life.

In the years that followed his first artistic expression, Gary mostly succeeded in following that desire to paint directly what was in front of him with fanatical attention to realistic truth.

Gary painted in his own way for his initial 13 years as an artist, taking a very narrow path, yet learning from its trajectory.

By the time he entered UC Davis’ graduate painting program, he was ready for a jostling of his artistic world view....

The challenge he has faced since those lessons were absorbed, was to find a balance between his two most extreme tendencies: The desire to push the sense of illusionistic space to its limits, versus his need to squeeze color relationships to the point of oscillation without losing the sense that he was transposing the visible world around him

Gary continues to choose his subject-matter very slowly, carefully and personally. The fleeting images he tries to suspend in paint, are, on one level, simply records of household objects, or distillations of landscapes and flesh. At the deeper level of content, however, Gary has wanted these works to address and describe the mysterious importance those otherwise common and mundane subjects held for him.
